Artributos
"They place all their bets on one card, irrespective of the results. But successful works need much more than a brilliant idea. They need perseverance, willpower, courage, discipline, rigour, humility, a willingness to dialogue and listen to the market and to providers, to fellow artists and society. (...) Good ideas are plentiful, what's lacking are useful and innovative realities that strive for excellence and desire to be of service. They are the entrepreneurs who will survive and consolidate their initiatives."
Àlex Rovira (excerpt from an article El País)
I can't think of a better way to
introduce ArTributos than to begin with this excerpt, which also applies to the
team that produces it, to the artists and cultural initiatives in this field and
the professionals who write about them. Because “entrepreneurs persevere”.
Why this magazine? It’s simple:
there is no graphic medium that brings together artists and their work. I once
read that if we only write about works that already have an audience, we will
make a society of consumers, not citizens. So I started thinking about
publishing a magazine to provide information on new generations of performing
artists (without going into the archaeological genre divisions) who are starting
to have the "beat" of a generation.
For years now, the media have
been talking about the same artists and their “great achievements”. But there
are other projects that nobody talks about, which are also successful in Europe
and enjoy large audiences.
ArTributos aims to document the
“beats” vibrating on the nation's stages, the events, culture factories, and
everything related to the generation/gestation/promotion of these artists.
I had the opportunity to work for
and with the best performing artists in the cultural scene of the 80s and 90s -
I call them "stage animals". They have taken me to the most important national
and international festivals, and made me live through highly unusual
experiences. However, since turning to distribution/diffusion and consultancy,
one of my tasks is to work with emerging artists and position them within a
cultural framework so that they can circulate alone, sometimes, but not always,
successfully.
And so this magazine aims to be
an “open window” to bring content to a wide audience. We want it to become a
reference manual, one that doesn’t play with the immediacy or superficiality of
the latest "in" thing. We also want to introduce you to our collaborators, a
very talented bunch from a variety of backgrounds.
The texts in this publication
were written by philosophers, theatre theorists and people who have been
following a particular artist for years. Some of the artist portraits include a
short text written from an audience member’s point of view. Because performing
arts are staged for audiences, so we think it’s important to include their
voices here.
We have a lot to say, and many
tax-paying citizens are interested in reading it. It's easy to feel
insignificant in an industry where "success, fame and the boutade” hog all the
attention and muffle the most interesting voices. Sometimes we ask ourselves
whether it's worth doing what we do, but just as ants end up changing an
anthill, every human action has the capacity to transform its environment.
We just have to add them
together!!!
